Appleton is located on the Fox River. It has an estimated population of 70,217 residents. Appleton was settled in 1847. At first Appleton was originally incorporated as a village in 1853. Ten years later in 1857 Appleton was incorporated as a city. The city was the first in Wisconsin to have the telephone. In 1954 Appleton`s Valley Fair Shopping Center was built.
Education is important Appleton is served by the Appleton area School District. It is home to Lawrence University. Lawrence University is a private liberal arts college located on the shores of the Fox River. The university was formed before the city founded.
